Closet Organizing

Woman Within Easy Update Banner
unorganized closetDoes your closet look like this? If you have this many clothes and no system to organize it, you are going to be wasting time and money on your wardrobe. Time because you can never find the pieces you are looking for, and when you do they are wrinkled from being stuffed and shoved into any place they will fit and then need to be ironed before they can be worn. Money because you keep re-buying pieces that you lost or can't remember you have - how can you remember all those items if you can't see them?

organized closet The most basic secret to being a Fashion Diva is to have a basic wardrobe, and have it organized! Look at this job as going shopping in your closet. The reward is to have an organized, perfectly matched, time and money saving wardrobe.

Let's get started!

You will need:
3 Baskets
Enough of all-same hangers (wooden are best, throw out the wire ones if you can afford it)
A print out of the wardrobe basics
A completed colour profile (you can find a good one here)

Step 1: Take EVERYTHING out of your closet. We mean everything. Including that shoebox kaleidoscope you made when you were 10. That box of pictures you forgot about. Come on, we know you have it in there! Stay focused, put the box of pictures aside for later. Give your closet a good clean up, wipe down, make it smell pretty.

Step 2: Let’s get this mess sorted out. Remember those 3 baskets we said you needed? They come into play here. Everything you have removed from your closet (except maybe the science project from grade 10) belongs in one of the three following baskets:

Basket 1: I want to keep these things!
Basket 2: I want to donate these things!
Basket 3: Oh.My.God, where did I get these things? (garbage)

There are of course a few rules to follow.

1.Only keep things that FIT YOU NOW, and only if they are things you love to wear.

2.If they don't fit perfectly, but will fit with a minor adjustment (a button moved over a bit, need hemming) they can go in Basket No. 1. But only if you love them.

3.If they don't fit you RIGHT NOW, give them away. Yes, I'm talking about the $100 jeans that you bought 2 years ago when you were 20 pounds lighter. That "had to have" dress that cost a fortune, but you never wore because it pulls in the boobs. Yes, we are even talking about all those things in there with the price tag still on. Basket No. 2. You will be blessing someone else with these things. If you can't bear to give them away, ask a friend to sell them over Ebay for you for a percentage of the sales. Whatever you do, they MUST LEAVE YOUR HOUSE.

4.Again, we all have "skinny" clothes hanging in our closets, punishing us for not being as thin as we once were. Get rid of them! We are dressing for now, not the past and not the future. Even if you lose the weight in one or two years, do you really think those clothes will still be fashionable?

5.Any clothes with holes, fraying, or otherwise unwearable belong in Basket No. 3.

6.Any clothes that you must absolutely keep for whatever reason (your wedding dress, for example; but NOT that aforementioned expensive dress that pulls at the boobs!) should be put in a hanging clothing bag and stored elsewhere. We don't want stuff that we are not wearing filling up our closet and restricting our space. Put them in the attic, spare bedroom, your Moms house; be creative.
